
- Since late 1808 a group of Quiteños began the conspiracy against the Spanish crown.
- At the beginning of 1809 the plot was discovered by the Government and the main particpants were arrested, but soon had to be released for lack of evidence.
- On August 7th, 1809, Juan de Dios Morales convened a meeting at the home of Don Francisco Javier Ascazubi, in the district of San Marcos, to draft the Revolution Act.
- On August 8th, another meeting was held to decide the coupe that they would give the next day, however, for lack of assistance they organized another social meeting at Manuela Cañizares’ house, where they drafted the final version of the Revolution Act.
- During this meeting the Junta Suprema de Gobierno (Supreme Government Committee) was established, with Juan Pío Montúfar, Marquis of Selva Alegre, as president, and doctors Morales and Quiroga and don Juan Larrea as State Secretaries.
- On the morning of August 10th, 1809, Dr. Antonio Ante presented the Statement to the Conde Ruiz de Castilla. The Statement pointed out that the Junta Soberana takes over control of the territories of Quito, Guayaquil, Popayán, Pasto, Barbacoas and Panama, which at the moment depended of the Lima and Santa Fé Viceroyalties.
- Unfortunately, the government of the Junta Soberana lasted only 77 days because of the lack of leadership and support of the other provinces.
- The Conde Ruiz de Castilla took up his position again, promising not to take reprisals against the rebels. However, he did not follow his promise. The troops arrived from Lima to Quito on November 24th, 1809 and began to stop insurgents from December 4th.
- On August 2nd, 1810 a group of Quiteños attempted to liberate the Patriots on August 10th, but it resulted in a terrible massacre that took place between August 2 and 4th and left over 300 victims.
- The Quito Revolution was a pioneer in Latin America. The Junta Soberana of August 10th , 1809 began the process of independence is now Ecuador.
